About SEPT

University of Leipzig

Founded in 1409 as the second university in Germany, the 600 years old University of Leipzig has always committed itself to the principle of universitas litterarum. More than 190 disciplines are taught at the university’s 14 faculties and 150 departments. An even wider choice of individual study programs lead to bachelor of sciences and master degrees and teaching qualifications. The courses offered at the university cover traditional subjects such as law, medicine, economics, social and natural sciences as well as new fields of academic interest like environmental sciences, media and communication studies.

This wide range of study programs reflects the needs of the various industries settled in and around Leipzig, a city that is frequently described as both a commercial and a cultural center. In order to meet these changing needs, the University of Leipzig has introduced innovative courses and unique study programs like "Information Technology in Insurance and Medicine", "The Law of Banking and Stock Exchange", or "Book Sciences/Book Trade Economy" and Public Relations. In addition, the university offers interdisciplinary and international programs on post-gradual level, like European Studies, European Law, and the international master course Small Enterprise Promotion + Training (SEPT).

The University of Leipzig also contributes remarkably to the cultural heritage of the city of Leipzig. Not only the city’s Gewandhaus, the Opera and the numerous theatres are important cultural institutions, but the University itself as well. Its treasures are accessible to the public in three University-owned museums and in the University Library, which dates back to the 16th century. However, students will have a different perception of Leipzig’s culture. For example, the "Moritzbastei", the biggest students club in Europa, is located in medieval vaults and offers nightly programs of music, art, entertainment and discussion.

Both the University and the City of Leipzig are examples of a successful merging of tradition and innovation, thus making Leipzig an attractive place to live and to study.
